What is Working Holiday?
The working holiday program is, based on bilateral arrangements, allowed the youth to spend holiday while permitting them to work to supplement their livings in a different culture for up to a year. The program is designed to provide them with broad worldwide perspective and to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries by accepting them for a long period.
The program was started in 2009 in Taiwan and in 2010 in Hong Kong. The number of acceptance per year has been expanding to 10,000 and 1,500 respectively (bilateral) as of Jan 2022. The eligible age to the program is between 18 and 30. This is the Specified Visa that allows them to work in Japan and get wages under the Japanese Labor Standards Act.

What is Specified Skilled Worker?
In April 2019, Japan established a new status of residence, "Specified Skilled Worker.”
It enables foreigners to work in the 14 fields that face the serious labor shortage.
There are two types, “Specified Skilled Worker (i)” and “Specified Skilled Worker (ii).”
This system of the status of residence "Specified Skilled Worker" will accept foreign labor that has a certain degree of expertise and skills to mitigate to the serious labor shortage of small and medium-sized enterprises in the fields where have difficulty to maintain work force even if efforts are made to improve productivity and keep domestic human resources. -

Nursing Care; Building Cleaning Management; Machine Parts and Tooling Industries; Industrial Machinery Industry; Electric, Electronics and Information Industries;Construction Industry*; Shipbuilding and Ship Machinery Industry*; Automobile Repair and Maintenance; Aviation Industry; Accommodation Industry; Agriculture; Fishery and Aquaculture Industries; Manufacture of Food and Beverages; Food Service Industry

Specified Skilled Worker (i)
This is a status of residence applicable to foreign nationals who work in jobs that require a considerable knowledge of or experience in Specified Industry Fields.
【Summary of Specified Skilled Worker (i)】
○ Period of Stay: Renewed every 1 year, 6 months or 4 months, up to 5 years in total
○ Skill Standards: Confirmed by exams, etc. (Those who have completed Technical Intern Training (ii) are exempted from exams, etc.)
○ Japanese Language Level: Proficiency in Japanese language required in daily life and at the workplace needs to be confirmed by exams, etc.
○ Accompanied by family members: Basically not permitted
○ Eligible for support by Accepting Organizations or Registered Support Organizations -
Specified Skilled Worker (ii)
This is a status of residence applicable to foreign nationals who work as an expert in jobs in Specified Industry Fields.
【Summary of Specified Skilled Worker (ii)】
○ Period of Stay: Renewed every 3 year, 1 year or 6 months
○ Skill Standards: Confirmed by exams, etc.
○ Japanese Language Level: Unnecessary to confirm by the exams, etc.
○ Accompanied by family members: Permitted in a special condition (spouse and children)
○ Ineligible for support by Accepting Organizations or Registered Support Organizations
